"Headache" 2011 Acrylic, Watercolor, Oil Washes

Did this when I had a horrible headache, not being able to sleep, i used the concept of "skull splitting headaches" as a catalyst to create this image. The red box is a play on the concept of the black box, which is a body that inputs and outputs information, like the mind. When something in the body is inflamed it usually turns red. I used this idea to show the mind simply as the red shape, inflamed and in pain. I also really like working on this watercolor paper.

Here is a small portion of some of the works from Friends and Monsters. They are fun, its a good exercise, and if successful i make something awesome. i try to do one a day, after experiencing George Pratt's 30 portraits and 30 days, i decided to do these purely for experimental/ personal reasons. Trying each one to look different from each other. My references range from photos of my friends, online reference, mummies, death masks, ancient sculptures.

"Crash"

BitMemory was the first time I utilized glitch, processing and slit scanning elements in a functional illustration. The final product was focused towards branding a certain album with a glitch/beat aesthetic. This was also an exercise in utilizing textures in an efficient way. Finally i will be selling these prints at any size, just give me a call.

Been working on full color illustrations, although these have the same underlying concept of sculptures, they do not relate. Ive been enjoying texture a lot, so ive been painting this subject matter.

I have no access to a scanner, however with school starting next week, i hope to have better quality images, without glare.

A Screwdriver to Punch

Last of the portrait sets. its been fun experimenting, however experimentation on un composed portraits got boring.....fast. ive moved on to a new subject matter: Sculptures, monuments, eroded stone and giant samurais!

One big lesson to learn this week is that the next time i do something for fun. im gonna compose the picture, this way i im keeping it interesting, and learning and doing something i love. Of course i will be doing a portrait for time to time, perhaps not am many as i did this week.

This is going to be a long long post. The academy was fun. Learned a lot about the art world, illustration, history and working smarter. I could go on for pages about how amazing the entire experience is, but I would much rather explain it in person.

Recently ive been doing a lot of portraits. Partly to get better at drawing faces (which is still a complicated concept for me) and partly to experiment with new varieties of media. These were done to keep me excited and to open new way to approach any assignment.

Thanks to Brett Lindstrom and Van and the ZigZag Crew for giving me a chance to show my work and do live painting at the ZigZag Event on Friday, The event was freaking cool, although i was running on an hour of sleep, i still worked on a large scale painting at the event of the Astronaut (Coming soon). Met a lot of cool people, and saw a lot of cool art. I didnt sell anything during the event, but i got an offer to do a trade instead.

but im hoping that i can sell these, or trade these paintings. im going to keep them safe for the time being.

been doing a lot of painting this break. not all of it is worth the show though. most of it ends up in disaster. here are a few that made it some what alive. also some more sketchbook pages.

That and i took some images of christmas lights with my friends paul and fernando. then messed around on photoshop.

along with whatever im doing.

im also painting in a large moleskine. I remembered that in my first year. i used to keep a small moleskine in which i would paint in. Later i stopped, partly because i felt i shouldn't experiment unless i have the skills and knowledge, thats so not true. I also stopped because i started getting busy with just life drawing. Now i realize that it really dosent matter, all roads or no roads still lead to Rome. Rome being the goal. Im still drawing from life, but at the same time i am learning from experimenting in this 2nd sketchbook. I guess the one thing i think i want to do is keep a good balance. Listen to what professor and students tell me during critiques, draw, and paint and learn design, and go all out experimental and have a disregard for rules. Hopefully these experiences will help me someway. And hopefully i will stick to this book idea for a while.

Some are repeated in this blog, but here is the whole set of them. The experience was interesting, and very fun. The finish in some of these portraits are not as good as i wanted them to be. However, i did learn a lot about media. Wish to do more monotypes, wood stain, enamel paint and cold wax later.
